Phishing & Fraudulent Emails

Phishing & Fraudulent Emails

Buying Guide

Phishing & fraudulent emails are a popular scam nowadays. But just what is phishing? Use this guide to learn about phishing, how to protect against phishing and check out the latest in anti-phishing software.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is the type of deception where you receive fraudulent emails asking for some form of personal information, such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers, passwords, etc. The email may appear to be from your bank or credit card company, but in reality will take you to another site. Sometimes phishing attempts look really legitimate, but beware; making one bad mistake could cost you a lot of money.

Protecting Yourself Against Phishing & Fraud Emails

  • Use the latest products and services to help protect you against phishing
  • Never click on fraud emails and especially don’t reply or follow their link
  • Recognize if it is a phishing scam. Do NOT trust emails urgently requesting personal financial information! Check for spelling errors. If it were legitimate, it would address you by your full name, not “Dear User” or “Dear Subscriber.” To check if the email is real, call up the company (with a phone number you know) or go to the company’s website (using a search engine to find it).
  • Never send your personal or financial information through email. If you’re buying through a website, make sure the site is secure.
